Dear Friends,

On June 22, just past midnight, while people were asleep, the southeast provinces of Afghanistan (Paktika and Khost) were shaken badly by a devastating earthquake that caused the loss of thousands of lives and the destruction of many villages. The area's homes are mostly constructed from stones and mud and sticks.

Thousands of bodies were pulled out, and many more bodies are under the debris. The needs were already extreme due to sanctions and Taliban rulings and now this is another disastrous situation that people in that area have to deal with.

The Afghan Women's Fund immediately sent some emergency help, food, clothing, and monetary support to buy medicine and other needs. Again, we are overwhelmed with phone calls and heartaches, never-ending accounts of horrific circumstances and suffering. No amount of money can lessen the amount of pain of a 2-year-old boy who is the only survivor of the earthquake or the grief of an old grandpa who lost 33 members of his family or the 9-year-old old girl whose entire family is gone and now she is left alone at the mercy of the brutality and cruelty that she would be facing.

Fortunately, the schools which you have helped us to build are intact because they are not located in the area of the earthquake. But many of our volunteers have been affected and some of their family members were killed. The photograph above were sent to me by some of our volunteers

We are praying that more lives will be saved but the hardship of Afghanistan goes beyond the capability of a small organization like ours to address. So, we are appealing for help. You have opened your hearts in the past and given generously, and I beg and implore you to do so again in this latest emergency.
